This is a barbiturate that is fast-acting in two senses: It kicks in quickly and it doesn't make you groggy in the morning. HOWEVER, be very aware of the cons; it's definitely not for everyone and is generally only used for short periods of time, though I have been prescribed it for years.

Barbiturates are good for pain. If someone is depressed because of pain. This could be a big help if this is the cause. However, for most people with depression Barbiturates can be bad because they can cause the opposite effect as well as other problems. So, be careful with any medicine with Barbiturates int it. All i can say is no matter what medication you take do your research! Look at the possible side effects as well as your own problems! For people with Fibromyalgia Barbiturates make the pain worse! If you have Fibromyalgia you should stay away from this medicine and others with Barbiturates.

It works quickly and is out of your system fairly quickly as well, so it's nice not to have a hangover effect or wait 4 hours for it to put you to sleep.
Sleep is generally either dreamless (is seems) or pleasant; I have had no trouble with bad dreams, as I did with Ambien).
My psychiatrist, who is also a doctor of internal medicine, said that if it's used correctly, there is a low risk of addiction and it is safer, on balance than Ambien or many of the other hypnotics currently being marketed.

-It's not for everyone—If you have an addictive personality, do not take it, as it can be addictive.
-Also, the effects of inducing sleep may wear off after time; like at first you might sleep really well and then not so well a month or two later.
-I don't know that this is a con but it's worth mentioning that it really requires a close, honest doctor-patient relationship. You can't mix it with alcohol or other "downers" and expect to be okay. But then, you have to make responsible choices. Yes, it can be misused to a person's detriment, thought thankfully, doctors have known for some 60+ years how to counteract overdoses and have saved a lot of lives. But it can kill you, in excess. I hope that isn't what you're looking for. That being said, ANYTHING can kill you in excess, so please don't go seeking something out to help yourself die. Most doctors won't even prescribe Seconal for that very reason—they know people have used barbiturates to harm themselves. But for responsible, honest individuals who really need the sleep, it's worth looking into, or perhaps I should simply say it was worth it for me.
