Hey Pete,

I am so glad you reached out here.

The double-whammy of depression is that it tells you how badly you feel, and it tells you there is nothing you can do about it. But that's not true. Depression is a treatable condition.

I encourage you to keep working with your doctor to treat your depression. It can take time, with lots of trial and error, to get to the right medication regimen. It takes lots of patience.

I am also wondering if you are in therapy. If you aren't, it might help to meet with a therapist who is experienced in treating depression, who can provide ongoing support and help you to develop some additional coping skills. I really encourage you to give therapy a try if you aren't already.

Pete, I am really sorry to hear you have been struggling so much with depression. You are not alone in this experience, my friend. I want to emphasize that depression is treatable. It can feel like an uphill struggle but I have seen many, many people who felt like you do come to a place in life where their depression is managed and they have more quality of life.

So I hope you will keep working with your mental health team. And I hope you will stay in touch with us.

Take good care of yourself!

Dr. Gary I really appreciate your care and your response. Problem is I had been in therapy for 6 years and have been testing every drug combo since 1989. I think I am just one of the LUCKY ones where nothing works. The roller coaster is so violent these days that I just can't take much more. I have ABSOLUTELY no support and no one to talk to except my kids— and you just don't go around saying "oh, Mommy was thinking about killing herself tonight"! I don't think suicide is selfish. It saves everybody pain and bother.
